I'm an Asian that's lived most my life in America. When he brought up the name a well-known asian american question, I drew a blank. All I could think was maybe ProZD? And sure, I felt that my parents experienced this a lot and put it on me when I was younger, but I don't think we feel the pressure as much in the newer generations, and I think things will change. I know many asian american friends and they're not stressing over GPAs, many even adapted the "C's get degrees" motto common among college students. I think it was a good segment, but I think there's definitely a difference between the view looking inside the box and the view from being inside the box. In this sense I don't think the college student tallking about GPA and studies was the best example, and I don't think it should be presented as seriously as it was. Sure, our parents are strict, and maybe some of that is reflective of the stereotype, but honestly it's something I think any college student faces regardless of race. Many Asian Americans have it worse than other Asian Americans. Where I grew up in, I was lucky I have never heard of any racist acts towards asian americans and I've never personally experienced it. We are in this broad category that assigns us this weird stereotype that's not easy to handle, but we can speak for ourselves. We're not just sitting and taking what is said to us anymore. Like most countries, and perhaps worse than other countries, America has its racial dark history. My great great relatives were taken over by the Japanese and it took a while before we were treated as people, even though there are still tensions to this day. I think that leaves permanent damage on a society.

The sooner you embrace your own culture, the sooner you can free yourself from cultural confusion. Anglo-Saxon colonialism is the source of turmoil in the entire world, from which you can’t find anything to be proud of. Don't let this ideology of bandit take your mind and don't let this garbage called identity politics fool you.

a person told my Japanese dad that his parents were interned in concentration camps during WWII "for their own safety". "they should be glad they got to go there, otherwise, they would have been subjected to violence." my dad said "when you are protecting something, you put a fence around it. then you have people with guns standing guard. If it was for their protection, why were the guns pointed inward?". My grandparents' family owned a farm and they were very lucky to have a white neighbor who offered to watch over it and keep their property from being ransacked or damaged while they were in the camps so that they would have something to come back to.

It's terrible when people try to equate all Asians with Chinese CCP. I think the violent attacks on Asian Americans and the racism exhibited against them are terrible. also, this might sound crazy if you haven't been paying attention but it was on my mind... Chinese CCP have infiltrated key companies/orgs/positions through funding/investing, bribes, subversion of education, social media manipulation, sophisticated hacks of government-private sector - utility systems. (funding talk show programs, funding movies*, funding *NBA*... caught bribing university prof to steal research, caught stealing jet technology during Clinton admin) . They literally added parts to covid to make it more infectious -called gain of function. *dare you to look up Pig-Monkey Chimeras Were Created in China *They(CCP) ARE AT WAR with the US. Despite most media acting like everything is fine.* A country that will use genocide against a group they don't like(current events Uyghur Muslims) besides their Mao revolution, they would stop at nothing from crippling their enemy, and subverting *democracy*(HK take over). PLEASE READ: THE ART OF WAR, Here is a few short excerpts: - All warfare is based on deception. - Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near. - Hold out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and crush him - If he is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him - If your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. - If his forces are united, separate them. - Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. - *Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting* - Therefore the skillful leader subdues the enemy's troops without any fighting; he captures their cities without laying siege to them; he overthrows their kingdom without lengthy operations in the field.

It makes no sense to talk about Bhutanese Americans as a rebuttal to the model minority stereotype when they are a small, small sliver of the group. 61% of Asians are either Chinese, Indian, or Filipino. If you include Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese, you get to 85%. Of course there are going to be outlier groups. But what is true for the majority of Asians? He deliberately avoided that topic.

John, we're all about racial equality, at least the kind of person who would watch your show, but I'm sorry to say you've become kind of a snowflake lately, every single show you have done since the season has started up again has been about white supremacy and white racism, I just wanted to point out that at the end of this video you actually played a clip of an Asian American man stating that people should be looked at as individuals and not by the stereotypes of their race, a comment to which you agreed to immediately after playing that clip but I wanted to bring to your attention that in this video and pretty much all the previous videos that you've done in this season where you're constantly talking about white supremacy you yourself have very hypocritically been comparing essentially all white people to being white supremacists, I just wanted to bring that to your attention because if there's one thing I hate it's a hypocrite also maybe you don't want to jump on the white hatred bandwagon just to make yourself as an individual look good try and show a little backbone to your own race, we can address racism in this country without making all white people look like racists or constantly beating white people over the head with the mistakes of their past rather than solutions for the future white people are no more perfect than any other race and we do have quite a few shortcomings but stop trying to make all of us out to look evil that's not social equality that's reallocation of hatred... And I know if you ever read this comment or any number of other people who may very well read it he'll automatically interpret what I'm saying is me being racist in some way or try to make me out to look racist simply because I don't agree with some of what you're saying, but just so you're aware I have Asian American friends, I have black friends, and I have Hispanic friends, I've never looked at any of them as anything less than equal and they have never looked at me as anything less than equal that is true social equality not this constant rhetoric that you're pedaling that makes it look like I as a person simply being born White somehow owes all the races of the world other than my own some type of penance because I have the same skin color of someone who previously treated them like assholes, I have never wronged another race for racial reasons and I'm not going to apologize for something I have not done... What you're doing is not creating social equality but rather you're widening the gap that separates some of us...

At 22:40 you deceptively use a statistic to support your argument that "that kind of pressure can do real damage" when describing how the leading cause of death for Asian Americans between the ages of 15-24 is suicide. Here is why you are wrong (according to the cdc/nchs at url: www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/suicide/rates_1999_2017.pdf" ): You claim that this is the result of expectations for Asian Americans "being too much to bear"; however, the rate of suicide in 2017 for "Non-Hispanic white" men age 15-24 is 27.2 while "Non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander" men age 15-24 is 16.9. That shows the rate of suicide in white men to be higher. For "Non-Hispanic white" females age 15-24 the rate is 6.4 to the respective "Non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander" rate of 6.6. Overall showing an increased rate of suicide for white men of 10.3 percentage points while white women have a decreased rate of 0.2. That is hardly a significant increase in the Asian American population's suicide rate. It appears to be a decrease compared to the white population. The way you present the statistic appears to be disingenuous. Instead of comparing the rate of deaths you simply state it as being high. Then you compare Asian American mental health usage to the usage by other ethnicities as being problematically lower, but if the Asian American suicide rate is lower, than it would make sense for there to be less mental health usage.

As an Asian American, people should know that its actually even more rude to ask where I’m “originally” from. I would rather you just ask me what my ethnicity is, if that’s what you want to know. It’s not racist to ask what a person’s ethnicity or race is. It’s racist to assume that an Asian can’t be from America.

Desegregating the Data -- What are the raw numbers ? Get off the percentages -- showing the percentages makes it come across as if you're skewing the data to fit your epidemic narrative: According to the 2010 Census -- there are 25,000 Mongol-Americans in the US. Sooo ... 25% of 25k = 6250 Mongol-Americans living in poverty. It's funny how this story flops a bit when you look at the actual raw numbers isntead of the huge scary percentages. The numbers go up a bit when you breakdown teh Burmese-Americans he mentions: 2010 census shows ~193,036 Burmese-Americans. 25% of thatg is 49,259. So yeah 49k still looks like a big number (if they're all grouped together in a small localized area -- but the 48 contiguous states is around ~3 Million square miles -- still kind of waters down the numbers). Yes even John Oliver twists the information to support his show.

Although I like how Oliver tries to look at the bigger picture of things, I believe that majority of Asian successes primarily comes from tradition and culture. My family insisted I take after school private tutoring for the SAT even though they didn't have money at the time. This is a similar case to a lot of my other Asian colleagues, whether they were Korean, Chinese, indian, Pakistani, etc. This kind of expectations and the culture surrounding education and conservatism may lead to a lot of pressure on Asian youth, which is what I believe is the leading cause of suicide of Asian youth. Mental health also has a stigma in Asian culture and that is probably why most of us don't seek therapy or mental help. I'm sure white supremacy has had SOME part in the problems we face in America, but we also have to look inward into our culture and fix the problems as well.

While culture does play a huge role, I still think the greatest factor is due to: 1. Asians having been historically treated better. 2. Many of the Asian immigrants being from the upper class.

Here's something to casually talk about with people: Let's take a DNA test together! They cost like 100 bucks/euros. Let's see where we are from and where our parents are from, and their parents, and their parents. No? Why not? I thought you were proud of your heritage and interested in knowing your true origins. Oh well... shall we talk about something else than race and nationality?

Remember when a Rabbi & guests were killed in NY during Hanukkah 2 yrs ago? It’d be easy to forget since the media glossed over it bc the shooter was a Black Israelite. The selective outrage is what drives so many people apart
