This has been a huge problem for a long time. In the 60s my father designed a grant program to help people stay in their homes longer. Had case workers go by their home 3-5 times a week to do some cleaning, shopping and get the meds bought and organized. It’s saved the state and federal government money. It was shared with other cities. Unfortunately the republicans and conservidems shut it down in the early 90s.

This answered a lot for me, so thanks for that. Wisconsin sucks for caring for individuals with disabilities. At age 47, awaiting Medicare to process a custom manual wheelchair order, I go days without food and medicine each month, unable to get to shopping. Every group that could help, even meals on wheels, says I do not qualify (to be treated with dignity) til I am 60. SE WI won't even reopen mental health "due to covid" when all other medical specialists are now even doing surgeries again. But serious, this totally explains why Republicans didn't agree to this bill.

I mean, I'm not a high IQ genius, but I feel like the minimum safety requirement for any kind of living space is gator-proofing it and keeping the alligators away from the residents.

I worked in a nursing home years ago before covid and it's always been awful. At least this place was. They'd get residents out of bed and wheel them into the TV room to sit there all day then about 8 hours later move them back to their rooms to go to bed. Everyone would take a break and ignore anything going on till they were done. It made me so depressed I quit after 2 days. There are better places but you have to look. Staff shortage is horrifying and most of the time I had to work on the floor even though I’m not supposed to. Also sometimes I got to work 2 wings which means 44 residents instead of 22 residents. So when my husband needed care for dementia I changed four memory care units. Capitol Lakes one of the most expensive nursing home was the worse, Brookdale memory care is as bad as Capitol Lakes. He would be running with dripping urine from the depends not changed for the whole day. Losing him on the street and no one notices. Only one CNA for 22 residents per shift horrifying. He got UTI constantly, 12-13 thousand dollars a month, ridiculous 👹👹👹

Part of the understaffing in nursing homes has to do with the low pay, and the wall street companies and their investors profiting from the nursing home industry. Better policies need to be implemented at the state level and federal level too, and without lobbying power and influence by these companies. And this I know before seeing John's entire video. And on Medicare: the health care system is milking it!

As a healthcare worker... I promise myself never to pick up a job at a nursing home because I know I cannot function as a nurse that I'm trained to do. The nursing homes in this country is deplorable. Terrible staffing level, nurse to patients ratio is unmanageable... People in America are living longer, but really sick... So guess what happens when you try to put 1 nurses to 30 patients? They are in charge of charting on top of administrating medications in all kinds of route... oral, injections, IV, peg tubes, etc... You also have wound care because you have elderly with fragile skin, surgical site care, disease process... all top of emergency events that happens when you have a bunch of patients who are prone to falls, and other medical emergencies. You cannot expect nurse assistants to do all that work to keep patients safe... Just physically impossible. Medically, you are supposed to turn your immobile patients every 2 hours to avoid preventable pressure ulcers... and on top of toileting, bathing, feeding, changing bed linens and whatever else you need to do... Yeah, so it is humanly impossible if these nursing homes staff a skeleton crew.

I work as a CNA myself and honestly the hall i work on isn't bad. The avg census is roughly in the low 20s and we often have 3 aids on the floor. For the sake of math; more so to make it easy lets say everyone takes 6 - 8 residents. Now for the the tricky part i work day shift which is 6 - 2 and of course includes 2 meals and getting everyone up. What the one lady said about the resident maybe getting changed once is the reality. I try to aim for 2 - 3 times during a shift, but things happen im only human. I wish truly wish i could do more than i do, also i don't make dick, only 13.50 hell i could make more at mc donalds.

This reminded me why I don't talk to my family anymore. I and my husband and my father spent 2 years living with and taking care of my grandma for free. (Actually, we PAID RENT. So she got free money out of it too!) Cooking, cleaning, helping her bathe, caring for her dogs, yard-work, shopping for her (she never left the house) etc. After she died, My family (except my father) disowned me, falsely believing grandma had left me more money than she had left them, and somehow thinking this would keep me from receiving it from the will. Actually she had already given me my entire inheritance in the form of a new car when I graduated high school 20 years ago. So they disowned me for money that didn't exist. I have never felt so betrayed and I actually had a mental breakdown and it took me 5 years to recover even slightly. They can go straight to hell. :-(

The nursing home my dad died in, committed medicare fraud by billing Medicare for 2 weeks that he wasn't there (they discharged him, sent him home, and less than month later, he was back in the hospital and then sent back to them, and later died there. But there were several weeks where he was at home, but they were billing Medicare as if he was still with them). They also tried to steal his oxygen machine after he died by refusing to return it to us (they did return it later when an honest JANITOR located it and called us; the people in charge never admitted about it and tried to call us liars). But my mom lost the paperwork that showed they had charged Medicare for weeks he wasn't there, so we cannot report them to Medicare for fraud and that bothers me so much.

You maybe wouldn't believe it, but it's nearly the same in Germany. Our nursing homes have way too little staff, and this staff is getting nearly as old as the patients, because those jobs are so underpaid none of my generation (-/+ 10 years) want to learn them. Of course, USA worse, but we're getting closer.
